A darkly comic tale of the old battle between the fundamentalism of the East and the commercialism of the West, this is a history of the quite near future. In an unheard of place called Orap, an American woman is imprisoned for fighting the fundamentalist government. Orap is currently under a Taliban like regime. Every time the regime changes the new government turns the year back to zero, as if to begin history again. Confronted with family truths and a difficult and painful past, the American's situation is complicated by pregnancy. She must escape because she knows the regime has plans for her unborn child but she doesn’t know what they are. To survive she retreats into the past and tells her story in an attempt to figure out for once and for all who she and her strange dislocated, eccentric family really are.
